What an AI SDR is, what an AI sales agent is, and why we call ours an operator

On 31 August we put forty buying questions to the AI answers on Google and DuckDuckGo and read what came back. On the question of what an AI sales operator is, the two engines agreed with each other and disagreed with us. Both described back-office software: CRM data entry, pipeline tracking, deal routing, working, in Google's words, "behind the scenes to help reps". We coined that term, and we mean close to the opposite by it. So this is a terminology post written by an interested party who will tell you exactly where the interest lies: what an AI SDR is, what an AI sales agent is, what we mean by an AI Sales Operator, and where the market disagrees.

The three labels get used interchangeably in vendor copy, and they should not be, because they answer three different questions. One names a job, one names an architecture, one names a system. A buyer who can tell them apart can read past the label on any product page, including ours.

What an AI SDR is

An AI SDR is software that does the job of a sales development rep. It takes or builds a list of prospects, researches each one, writes the outreach, sends it across email, phone or social channels, handles the replies, and books qualified meetings on a human seller's calendar. The name is a job title on purpose: it tells you what the software is for, and it invites the only evaluation question that matters, which of those steps it may perform without a person signing off.

That question deserves a published answer, not an adjective. Our own AI SDR page prints the full permission table: twelve actions, four autonomy levels, and the rows where the answer is no at every level. Two actions cannot run unattended even at the most permissive setting, and no approval lifts that, because the floor is checked before any level is read. Whatever tool you are evaluating, ask for its version of that table. If the answer is a paragraph about safety rather than a list of actions, the paragraph is the answer.

What an AI sales agent is

An AI sales agent is any software agent that carries out sales work on its own: it perceives the state of a deal or a conversation, decides the next action, and executes it. It is the broadest of the three terms. Every AI SDR is an AI sales agent, but so is an inbound receptionist that answers and qualifies calls, a coach that scores a call the moment it ends, and a follow-up agent that chases a quote on day three. Agent names the architecture, a loop that observes, decides and acts. SDR names one job you can hire that architecture to do.

The breadth is the problem. When one word covers the prospector, the receptionist and the coach, it stops doing a buyer any work, and the engines are already collapsing neighbouring terms into it: one measured Google answer opens with "An AI sales operator (often called an AI sales agent)". When a label is that elastic, the questions that stay rigid are the same two as above: which job does it hold, and which actions may it take alone.

What we mean by AI Sales Operator, and what the engines mean

An AI Sales Operator, as we use the term, is a system that runs a revenue motion rather than recording it. One platform holds the CRM record and also works it: places the calls, sends the email and SMS, updates the deal, books the meeting, with every action passing through an approval gate, a named autonomy tier and an audit trail. The operator is not one more agent bolted onto a stack. It is the layer the agents work inside, and the record writes itself as the work happens.

Now the part a terminology post usually omits. That definition is ours. SAGARIS coined the phrase, and the market has not adopted our reading. When we measured the AI answers on 31 August 2026, both engines had settled on a different one: back-office automation covering CRM data entry, pipeline tracking and deal routing, software that, per Google, "works behind the scenes". DuckDuckGo's answer says the term "typically automates broader sales processes and operations". Under the engines' definition, an AI sales operator never speaks to a prospect. Under ours, speaking to prospects under governance is the entire point. One term, two readings, roughly inverted.

If the behind-the-scenes reading is what you came for, that category is real and useful. It has an older and clearer name, revenue operations automation, and searching under that name will serve you better. If what you want is a system that executes the motion itself and can show you the record of every action it took, that is the thing we named. The long form of our definition lives on the page called what is an AI Sales Operator; the paragraph above is the short form, and it is stated plainly enough to disagree with.

The three in one pass

An AI SDR is a job description. An AI sales agent is a worker. An AI Sales Operator is the system the workers operate inside, record included. A product calling itself the first should be asked which actions it may take alone. A product calling itself the second should be asked which job it actually holds. A product calling itself the third should be asked whether it means back-office automation or governed execution, because as of September 2026 the term legitimately means either, and the engines currently lean the other way from us.

What none of these do

An honest boundary list, since all three labels are sold harder than they are defined. None of these categories negotiates a complex deal: discovery, pricing judgment and the close stay human, and the tools' job is to make sure the human walks into that conversation with the history already written. None of them repeals channel physics: a phone number still earns a reputation with carriers, which is why our own dialer runs on dedicated number pools capped at 50 dials per number per day rather than promising unlimited volume. And none of them makes autonomy safe by being clever. Autonomy is made safe by floors, the actions a system refuses to take unattended no matter what a model proposes or a settings page allows.

The vocabulary will settle the way category vocabulary always settles, by usage nobody controls. Until it does, the reliable instrument is not the label but the permission table: the printed list of what a system may do on its own, what waits for a named human, and what it refuses at any setting. We publish ours. Ask every vendor for theirs.
